| Samsung C&T Wins 800M Plant Order in Abu Dhabi
- Private-funded CCPP construction to produce 1,510MW of Electricity
- Samsung Earns the Position of Global Leader in Power plant Business
Samsung C&T Corporation won a bid to construct a combined cycle power plant (CCPP)
worth $810 million (820 billion won).
Samsung C&T, led by CEO Sang-dae, Lee, announced that it signed the contract to build a
CCPP with GDF Suez, a global leading independent electricity producer in France.
The construction involves building a CCPP that generates 1,510 MW as a part of the
¡°Shuweihat phase 2 (S2) power generation and desalination project.¡± Following a five month
preceding stage of designing and selecting materials, construction will begin in December
and is scheduled to be completed by the end of August, 2011. The total duration of the
construction is 32.5 months.
The Shuweihat phase 2 (S2) power generation and desalination project is a private-funded
power supply project, jointly developed by GDF Suez and Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity
Authority. It aims to build the CCPP and desalination facilities simultaneously in the Jebel
Dhanna area, 250 km west of Abu Dhabi, the United Arab Emirates. Total investment in the
project amounts to $2.5 billion.
Samsung, which signed an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract, will
carry out the entire process ranging from designing the project to producing materials and
equipment, installing them and running test operations, supplying a heat recovery steam
generator and auxiliary power supply equipment as well as installing electrical equipment.
Samsung formed a consortium with Germany¡¯s Siemens in the international bidding and faced
strong competition from prominent construction companies including France¡¯s Alstom
consortium and Spain¡¯s Iberinco consortium, but succeeded in winning the bid thanks to its
successful track records in Singapore and Indonesia.
Based on its past experience of power plant EPC, Samsung secured price competitiveness to
successfully win the bid with an optimal electricity generation system.
Samsung C&T has been putting a lot of effort into developing technologies and fostering
talents since it designated five core businesses, including construction of sky scrapers,
power plants, bridges and harbors. The winning of the bid is touted to provide a new
opportunity to the company to enhance its global competitiveness in power plant business.
¡°By winning the project, Samsung¡¯s capability of project execution and technological lead in
power plant business will be acknowledged worldwide,¡± said Chul-ho, Kim, executive vice
president who leads the company¡¯s plant division. ¡°We are planning to expand our presence
in overseas power plant market, including the Middle East, Latin America, and CSI.¡±
